PROJECT DESCRIPTION

It is always somehow difficult to find a place for oneself at the foyer of a theatre - the large scale of the space contributes to the unsettledness, hence we thought to create spaces where people can relax within the large theatre foyer.

When one sees light in a dark space, it is almost certain that one would feel relaxed; we believe there exists the fundamental emotional value of lighting for humans. On the other hand - umbrellas. Simply by opening up an umbrella, a special space is created underneath immediately. The sight of a couple sharing an umbrella sheltering from the rain always brings a smile to onlooker's face. Although "umbrella" and "light" do not share functional commonality, we felt their commonality in providing a sense of "something warm and cosy", and decided to merge the two literally.

Lighting on itself can only be bringing brightness to the space, however by combining with umbrella, it transforms the space into something soft and relaxed, into a space with ambiguous tenderness. At the large, dim theatre lobby, spaces of little light pockets are dotted. People enjoying the complex patterns of light and shadow, group chatting in circle animating the space; the sight of people enjoying the comfort within these dotted light pockets. It is how we create spaces for people where they can relax.
